We discovered that owls eat their prey whole! Once it is in their stomach, they cannot digest every part of it. Because owls cannot digest the bones and fur of the animals they eat the indigestible parts are regurgitated (spit up) in the form of a pellet about 12 hours after eating.
We dissected an owl pellet and used a chart to identify the bones of the animal. The bones were used to identify a mole, vole or starling.
