Writing

Writing at Wilshere-Dacre Junior Academy

The children at Wilshere-Dacre really enjoy the range of topics we cover across the school and so we try to link our writing units to these topics in order to motivate and engage them to develop their writing skills.

Each half term, we focus our English learning around a class book - this may fiction or non-fiction, it may be a novel, a picture book or even a graphic novel! Across the year the children will meet a range of characters from a variety of backgrounds and will have the opportunity to write about what they read as well as take on the roles of some of those characters.

Presentation Guidelines for Writing

We are very proud of our books here and we encourage the children to think about their presentation in all subjects, not just English.

All children from years 3-6 have the chance to write in pen. We use DUNLUN to record the date and learning objective at the top of each page, we rule off after each piece of work and we work hard to use joined handwriting throughout the school. Children in years 5 and 6 have the opportunity to earn a fountain pen for continually wonderful presentation - the criteria to earn one of these are listed below.

Spelling

We use Spelling Shed to teach spelling lessons three times a week across the school. For spelling, children are grouped by ability and have the chance to learn spelling rules at their own level.

All spelling homework is set on the Spelling Shed website. Children have their own personal usernames and passwords which are stuck into their reading records at the beginning of the year.

Below is the link to Spelling Shed as well as some useful parent guides so that you can support your child with their homework.
